Today’s Meeting Time - Report Card Time

May 26th, 2009 Posted in | No Comments »

Today’s Meeting - Report Cards
We will not meet today as a section, instead please work on your report cards. Remember that once you have finished your comments, please ask another teacher to proof them for you. Things like the correct use of he/she, use of “reporting period” instead of “term”, and the correct spelling of the child’s name are very important.

K-2 Small Group Meeting-Friday, April 24

April 24th, 2009 Posted in | No Comments »

During today’s small group meeting, Early Years Three to Grade Two teachers discussed their observations about the Common Assessments for Literacy.

Heidi noticed that the ORT levels are low but after looking more closley, the running records indicate that (when tested) most of the students are reading with at least 95% accuracy and more often 100% accuracy. While reading in this range is beneficial when students are reading independently, instructionally, teachers need to strive to provide students with suitably challenging text. Suitably challenging text is between 90% and 95% accuracy. Teachers must continue to use the running record and continue to raise the level in order to determine each child’s instructional level. This will also give the teacher more insights into the strategies that each child is using when reading and can indicate a specific area for teachers to focus their instruction.

It is clear that the Common Assessments provide teachers with a range of valuable information about each child’s progress in literacy. Teachers now need to specifically determine where each child needs support and teach to these needs. This is at the heart of differentiated instruction.

Some of the assessment folders are still not up to date and teachers need to finish them ASAP as the deadline was by the end of Term Two.
